One of the things that we hope to experience in every culture is their culinary arts. Laura and i were treated yesterday to an experience that we wont soon forget! Laura picked a cooking school called Periuk Bali. Owned by Wayan, one of the local chef's at a nearby hotel, it is a family run business and we had a chance to meet most of the family! Our tour started at 7:30AM in the morning when he picked us up in the bus. We were fortunate that for this class we were going to be the only ones!
Our day started off in the Ubud Market, located accross from the Ubud Palace. We had been here before, but not in the early morning. Open from 4AM to 9AM, the market has all the fresh fruits and vegetables you would need. Wandering around the kiosks and stalls, you can get a sense of how busy this place can get when it first opens up. We went towards closing and there still was activity. After the market, we took a tour of a rice pattie and learned how the farmers circulate their crops and the types of crops they have. Did you know that they grow 4 types of rice? I dont think i knew there was 4 types of rice! Growing Black, Jasmine, Sticky, and Brown, the local Ubud farmers only typically grow Jasmine due to the soil composition.
